Getting the Lay of the Land

7-7-11
Today classes went well, we each had to read an article in the Costa Rican newspaper and bring it in to talk about in class. The teacher really liked mine. I chose an opinion piece on whether or not Costa Rica should explore and exploit its deposits of natural gas and oil. It actually started a good discussion, all in Spanish of course! Our teacher told us that Fridays were movie days and that tomorrow we would be watching the Motorcycle Diaries, it’s a recent movie about the life of Che.  After class I met up with some other girls and we walked to a local pizza place for lunch. Little pizza places are very popular here for lunch, there are about three within walking distance to campus. I love Costa Rican food, but the other girls were already craving some familiar food. After we ate, we walked around the neighborhood to see what was near and if we could find a grocery store where we could get snacks. Four hours is a long time to be in class so we get a snack break at 10. I should definitely have brought more of those Balance bars!! My friend Holly and I walked around the neighborhood and found of all things an Asian family owned mini-mart that had some bars in it, (but no mint chocolate-y ones!!). What was even stranger was that the toy the baby was playing with was singing in strangely accented English,” I’m going to Alabama with a banjo on my knee” over and over again… It was a bit creepy. We also scouted out some new places to eat and made plans to take the bus into the city and go to the National Museum on Monday or Tuesday! I found my museum touring group!! I knew they would be out there somewhere.  Tonight I have my SD class and then I think I will go to the Latin Dance class.  I even got in a doggie fix when I met a man walking his Golden Retriever on the way to class!
Side note: we are now at two days without rain!? It’s crazy and I wish the rain would come back, my allergies are starting to creep back!
